Remember the bookbags you carried back in elementary school? If you were lucky, Mom took you back-to-school shopping for slacks, shoes and a new bookbag to hold all those textbooks. I can’t remember what my last bag looked like. But when I started playing around with discarded textbooks, I knew what my next bookbag could look like.

Long before I bought shoulder bags made from a Guatemalan coffee sack and knitted plastic grocery bags, and way before upcycling or DIY were terms I’d actually heard of, I started making book purses.

Happy to report there are several, new-to-me book purses in production. Here are a few from the archives.

as the HERO flies...

Attention Short Story Authors –

Flash Fiction Chronicles, a blog devoted to the art of short-short stories, is having their fifth annual String-of-10 Flash Fiction Contest. The basic idea: they give you ten prompt words, and you have until this Saturday (Feb. 9th) to write a very short story (250 words or less) that seamlessly incorporates at least four of the ten words. There is no cost to enter the contest, and the prizes include money, publication, t-shirts, books and other cool stuff. Each author can enter up to two stories. I entered last year, and had a total blast writing my story! It’s a great mental challenge, and a great workout for your author muscles. So, why not give it a shot?

You can find the rules, prompt words, links to past winners and all other relevant info here:

Have fun!

Also, for those who dig writing longer…

A fantastic writing contest for YA and Sci-Fi writers!

The View from a Berkeley Optimist

I just wanted to share with my writer friends a contest that I learned about on Facebook. It’s the Dear Lucky Agent contest sponsored by GLA (Guide to Literary Agents) and Writer’s Digest. Each year they change the genre. This time they are accepting young adult fiction and sci-fi. The deadline is January 31, 2013, so if you have something that’s ready (or can be ready in under two weeks), this sounds like a good opportunity. Apparently last year’s winner signed with an agent who sold the book. Now there’s incentive to enter a contest. The best part? It’s free! The blog that this link takes you to looks like it might be a good one to subscribe to or bookmark too:
